Psychotherapy and Counselling Services

‘I am not what happened to me. I am what I choose to become.’

Carl Jung

Psychotherapy has made huge strides over the past 20 years and the current research findings indicate that more and more people than ever are turning to psychotherapy and our society is growing and changing as a result of it. I believe that merging relevant disciplines like neuroscience, energy psychology, evidence based psychotherapies and creative therapies can work in very useful and fascinating ways.

People come to psychotherapy sessions for all kinds of reasons. Some may feel that situations in their lives have become challenging and they need to develop new, healthier ways of coping. Others simply aim to strengthen their emotional well-being and resilience, so they can go on living full and happy lives. Yet others may feel ‘stuck’ in their life as a result of emotionally traumatic events that happened in the past and they need some direction to unlock their strength within, heal and move forward.

A psychotherapy session is a safe, entirely confidential space for working through thoughts and emotions. I believe that everyone has the strength within to deal with their challenges; my role as a psychotherapist is to guide and support while the client grows in confidence and begins creating the life they desire.

Long-term psychotherapy

At the root of many of our emotional issues often is unresolved childhood trauma and difficult experiences that happen through the course of our life. During childhood we are forming an understanding of the world and our own place in it. We form a belief system that may not be helpful or based on facts, and the beliefs become programmed into the subconscious. In later life, we make decisions based on this subconscious programming. In psychotherapy, clients can explore these inner beliefs and challenge those that aren’t serving them well anymore.

Solution-focused brief psychotherapy

However, some clients would benefit from results driven approach. Many people can respond better to a moving forward type of therapy rather than looking back. Depending on the client’s needs where they are emotionally and developmentally. These type of clients can benefit from solution-focused therapy that is focused on making positive changes within a specific time scale, usually 6-8 sessions. It seems logical to me to choose the type of psychotherapy, in conjunction with clients, that is best suited to their situation.

‘When one focuses on problems they tend to gain more problems. When one focuses on possibilities and solutions they gain more opportunities’ – Tatjana Simakova

I believe that providing clients with psychological ‘tools’ can be invaluable in their journey. I also believe in the power of a strong liaison between two people, especially when working with children and adolescents. A strong and trusting relationships enable clients to unlock their strength within and find inspiration, courage, confidence, success and contentment (happiness).

How do psychotherapy/counselling sessions work?

At the first session, we talk through your issues and what you hope to achieve through therapy. Afterwards, you are free to decide if you want to continue with counselling; there is no obligation to proceed. I always recommend that you trust your instinct. We can then arrange a schedule which works for you.

Every session is entirely confidential. However, there are limits to confidentiality, please follow the link here to learn more.

Sessions last 60 minutes for individuals and 90 minutes for couples and are held at a regular time slot each week.

I offer both conventional face-to-face therapy, available at my Ennis and Limerick locations, and online therapy. Online therapy, conducted by Skype, is a convenient, discrete alternative which involves no stressful travelling for appointments and more flexible appointment times. I currently work with clients all over the world. For more information, please follow the link here.
